In our profession we see many preventable injuries and accidents
caused by falls and unsafe conditions in the home. Even in perfectly
maintained homes, there can be accidents waiting to happen. Please
consider the following:
1.
Remove all area rugs, floor mats and runners.
2. Keep electrical cords, drapery cords and oxygen
tubing out of walk ways.
3. Keep walk ways, halls and stairs free of clutter.
4. Keep pets out from under foot.
5. Make sure all steps have handrails.
6. Switches that control lights should be at the
entrance of each room.
7. All rooms should have adequate lighting and a
light should be in easy reach of the bed.
8. Glasses, telephone, tissue and water should be in
easy reach of the bed and/or chair.
9.
Read labels before taking medications and store out of reach of
children and pets.
10. If you must smoke, do not smoke in bed or any
place where oxygen is being used.
11. Bathrooms and bedrooms should be equipped with
night lights.
12. Have a bell, intercom, phone or lifeline
available to summon assistance.
13. The shower and tub should be equipped with
non-slip strips or a mat.
14. The toilet, tub and shower should be equipped
with grab bars and elevated seats, as needed.
15. Footwear should fit well and have non-slip
soles.
16. Garments should not drag on the floor or counter
tops.
17.
Use ambulatory aids, such as a wheelchair, walker or cane, as
instructed by your doctor.
18. Have a first aid kit, poison kit and earthquake
kit stocked and available for emergencies.
19. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
20. Unplug small kitchen and bathroom appliances
after use and don't use near water.
21. Have medical and emergency numbers available by
all phones.
22. Do not rush to answer a phone or door. No call
is worth risking a fall.
23. Most importantly, have an emergency plan in
place in case of fire, earthquake or flood.
